Although the dynamic in life is interesting the plot carried out of the novel being read could have easily been made into a film in its own right. Gripping, dark and deeply depressing at times it's a film that will stay with you for days following. Aaron Taylor is a fantastic addition to the cast as the almost demonic red-neck Ray Marcus. It will have you screaming at the screen as Tony Jake succumbs to his own fear and lack of strength to protect his family during a strange and disturbing altercation with three unscrupulous men on a highway.
Nocturnal Animals is brutally cold, it leaves an impact on you long after you leave the cinemas and I truly hated this movie at times. But it really is quite a masterpiece, the narrative, the acting, the pacing is all perfect. So much despair with slight glimmers of hope, every frame has meaning and a purpose. I wouldn't be surprised if the sheer brutality turns people away from this film; it’s very real at times. Jake and Amy Adams are really on a roll at the moment with dual roles in this film is just outstanding. Sad to say but the idea of some kind of passive aggressive revenge narrative went straight over my head. I couldn't believe that the story was being that obvious and for me, the 'betrayal' by Amy Adam's character to hex not given enough weight.
